These Vegan Shakeology Alternatives are some of the very BEST clean, plant-based protein shakes and can save you money!

This post was originally published in 2020, but I've updated it with current pricing and info 🙂
Hey guys! I've been dying to get a post like this out for SO long! The question of "What are some less expensive Shakeology substitutes?" is one I get all the time. I procrastinated on it (as I am wont to do) because I knew it would be a ton of research and there are always a million other things on my list!
Anyway, it's finally here and I hope it's helpful to you!
What is Shakeology?
Shakeology is a nutrition shake from Beachbody (the company behind P90x and 21 Day Fix, among many other workout programs). It comes in several flavors, each with the option of being whey-based or plant-based. According to Beachbody, Shakeology is neither a meal replacement nor a protein shake, but it does count as a protein for their nutrition plans.
According to Beachbody, Shakeology can:
- Benefit your overall health so you can feel better
- Provide healthy energy
- Support healthy weight loss
- Support regularity and healthy digestion
- Curb cravings
I personally don't buy into all of that, but I know a lot of you LOVE Shake-o, but hate the cost - or hate the taste of Shake-o and are looking for something you might like a little better.
So that you can compare for yourself, here is all of the info for Vegan Vanilla Shakeology:
How much does Shakeology cost?
All varieties of Shakeology currently cost $130.00 for 30 servings, which comes to $4.33 per serving.
What is the nutritional information for Vegan Vanilla Shakeology per serving?
- 160 calories
- 3 grams of fat
- 16 grams of protein
- 0 grams of cholesterol
- 15 grams total carbohydrates
- 6 grams of fiber
- 7 grams of sugar
What ingredients are in Vegan Vanilla Shakeology?
Vegan Protein Blend (Pea protein, Flax (seed), Rice protein, Quinoa (seed)), Pea fiber (seed), Rose hips (fruit), Pomegranate juice powder(fruit), Yacon (root), Acerola juice powder (fruit), Astragalus (root), Bilberry juice powder (fruit), Blueberry (fruit), Camu-Camu (fruit), Chicory fiber (root), Bacillus coagulans, Organic cordyceps (fungi),
Lycium juice powder (fruit), Ashwagandha (root), Organic chaga (fungi), Organic maitake (fungi), Organic reishi (fungi), Spinach (leaf), Enzyme Blend (Amylase, Cellulase, Lactase, Glucoamylase, Alpha-Galactosidase, Invertase), Kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala) (leaf), Schisandra (fruit), Matcha green tea (leaf), Maca (root), Cinnamon (bark), Luo Han Guo extract (fruit), Chlorella. OTHER INGREDIENTS: Organic cane sugar, Natural flavors, Xanthan gum, Stevia leaf extract, Himalayan pink salt, Mixed tocopherols (to maintain freshness).
What I looked for in Vegan Shakeology Alternatives:
- I wanted it to be a much less expensive alternative to Shakeology (around half the cost or less)
- Have at least 15 grams of protein (and would count as a red for 21 Day Fix/Ultimate Portion Fix).
- Contain no artificial sweeteners or other questionable ingredients.
Flavor/Nutrition Disclaimer:
I ONLY looked at the vanilla flavors of these products (as of September 2020) unless there wasn't a vanilla (I will mention when this happens). Other flavors/product lines from these brands may have varying ingredients and nutritional information, so I can't speak for any specific products that aren't on this list (however, it is likely that other flavors of these products will also work, just read your label carefully).
- Btw, some of these shakes also have a probiotic blend and/or a superfood blend, the way Shakeology does, and I've noted the ones that do for anyone looking for those.
Sweetener Tip!
If you're not down with natural, zero-calorie sweeteners like stevia or monk fruit, quite a few of these brands offer unflavored/unsweetened varieties that might be worth checking out. Then you can sweeten them yourself by blending in some banana or adding a little honey or maple syrup. 🙂

Which one of the alternatives have you personally tried? Which do you like taste wise the best?
Stephanie says
Hi! I do plan to try them all, but the only one I've tried so far is the Earth Chimp and I liked it! I'm a little sensitive to sweeteners like stevia and monk fruit, but I didn't find the monk fruit overpowering like I often do.

With the Vega plus greens , is a scoop one red and does it count as a green ?
Stephanie says
Hi! I would just count one scoop of Vega Protein and Greens as 1 Red. It doesn't really have enough calories in it to count it as anything else, but I also think of it as being similar to shakeology in the way of having added fruits and veggies, and we only count shakeology as a red. Hope this helps!

Thank you for doing this!!
