This Rye Mocha Cocktail is a deliciously decadent dessert cocktail perfect for Valentine's Day!
Hey guys! Happy almost Valentine's Day! I have a freaking delight of a cocktail for you to celebrate with and I really can't wait for you to try it.
This Rye Mocha Cocktail is a creamy and decadent chocolate and coffee cocktail with some great, spicy flavors from the rye. It's a crazy-perfect flavor combo!
And did I mention chocolate?
Ok, so I did. But it bears repeating, in my humble opinion.
As I've previously mentioned in my other recent cocktail posts (like my Autumn Apple Bourbon Cocktail and my Lavender Gin Sour) the hubs and I really got into making our own cocktails during quarantine. Along the way (well, through Shaker & Spoon), we stumbled across a bartender named Sother Teague. He recently wrote a wonderful cocktail book called I'm Just Here For The Drinks.
If you're someone who is really getting into making cocktails at home, I highly recommend it. Aside from the delicious drinks inside, it also has a ton of interesting info about the different spirits that it covers. His writing style is enjoyably sarcastic and I really loved it.
Anyway, this Rye Mocha Cocktail is my take on the Rye Cappuccino from Sother's book. I loved it so much and knew that I had to adapt it for you guys using ingredients that were 21 Day Fix approved and that would be easy to get your hands on (I don't know about you, but I don't have an espresso machine)!
Ok, let's do a little Q&A and then I'll show you how to make it!
What is Rye whiskey?
It is a whiskey that uses at least 51% rye grains in its mash (using a combination of corn and/or wheat for the remainder). The rye grains lend a spicy character to the whiskey that isn't found in other grains.
Which Rye whiskey is best?
Well, I'll be honest and say that I'm no connoisseur, but out of the few I've tried, I enjoyed the Rittenhouse Bottled-in-Bond the best. In doing some internet research before I bought my first bottle of Rye, that one always seemed to pop up as a favorite so I was pumped when I saw it at a liquor store near me.
Some that I haven't personally tried but hear good things about include Old Forester, Old Overholt, Angel's Envy and Knob Creek. Bulleit is another popular one, but it wasn't really for me.
All that being said, every person's palette is different so pick one up and see what you think!
Do I have to use Rye?
While I LOVE the Rye in this, you could definitely use whatever whiskey floats your boat and it would still be delish.
Will the Rye Mocha Cocktail still taste good if I don't have chocolate bitters?
Absolutely! I tested it so many ways, and one of them was without any bitters and it was still amazing. In fact, that's a big part of why the grated chocolate was added to the top, so you could still get that decadent chocolate flavor and aroma without having to find a special ingredient. Also, grated chocolate is sexy. That's just a fact.
What's the best tool for grating chocolate?
A microplane or similar style grater works beautifully! Somehow out of all of the gadgets I have, I didn't have a regular microplane, so what you're seeing in the photos is a microplane nutmeg grater that apparently they don't make anymore, but it worked great! You could also use the small side of a box grater or even just chop it finely with a knife, nbd!
Is this cocktail healthy?
Well, it's still a cocktail, so healthy may be a stretch, but it is 21 Day Fix approved and is lighter than similar cocktails you'd get in a restaurant.
It's also Weight Watchers friendly and the counts for all three plans are included in the recipe card. 🙂
Is this 21 Day Fix cocktail gluten-free?
This cocktail is considered gluten-free according to the FDA. From what I could find, the distilling process eliminates the gluten from the liquor, however some folks with celiac that are particularly sensitive may have issues with it, so proceed with caution if you could be one of those people.
Is the Rye Mocha Cocktail vegan?
Yep! Just be sure to use a vegan chocolate (Enjoy Life is a great brand, but there are others out there!). Also, here's a great list of vegan alcohol for anyone interested in checking it out!
How to make a Rye Mocha Cocktail:
Add the simple syrup to your shaker...
then the coconut milk...
then the cold brew concentrate...
then the bitters if you're using...
and last but not least, your whiskey!
Add ice and shake it like a polaroid picture!
Double strain into your glass...
Top with grated chocolate...
And enjoy!
Ok, so cocktails are sorted, but you still need a stunner of a meal to go with and I've got you!
Btw, it's on this list, but if you're not making my insanely good Lobster Bisque on Sunday, you ain't living, baby!

📖 Recipe
Rye Mocha Cocktail
This Rye Mocha Cocktail is chocolatey decadence and perfect for Valentine's Day!
Ingredients
- ½ oz simple syrup*
- ½ oz coconut milk
- 1 oz cold brew concentrate (like Starbucks - coffee and water should be the only ingredients)
- 2 dashes chocolate bitters (optional - you can omit or switch it up with other bitters, my husband loved orange bitters in this!)
- 1 ½ oz Rye whiskey (or whatever whiskey you like, but I highly recommend Rittenhouse Rye for this!)
- A small bar of dark chocolate, for grating (if you're vegan and/or dairy free, be sure your chocolate is vegan/dairy free (like Enjoy Life brand)!
Instructions
Add all ingredients (except for the chocolate bar) to a cocktail shaker, add ice and shake 5-10 seconds until nice and cold.
Double strain into a cocktail glass. Grate some of the chocolate on top and enjoy!
Notes
*To make simple syrup, just heat equal parts water and sugar (I used raw sugar, but white sugar is fine) just until the sugar has dissolved, then immediately remove from heat. Let cool and refrigerate.
**You can make two at once in your cocktail shaker as long as it's big enough (they usually are)!
