This delicious, clean-eating 21 Day Fix Barbecue Sauce will have you wondering why you ever bought the stuff!
Let me just say that I hope you guys really love this one, because I worked for it. My family worked for it (well, sort of. They had to eat quite a few BBQ-related meals practically in a row. Oh darn.) It is the product of blood, sweat and tears. Ok, so no blood or tears went into the making of this barbecue sauce, but I did make what felt like a gazillion batches until I felt that it was juuuust right, Goldilocks-style. There probably was some sweat, though. It is summer, people, it's freaking hot in herrr. Oh, I put the love in it, too, in case you were wondering.
Since I'm keeping this short and sweet, on to our bonus recipe... BBQ Chicken Pita Pizza!
Did you know that the California Pizza Kitchen invented the barbecue chicken pizza? I saw that on TV once (and just now I googled it, ya know, for you). You may remember my love for them from my Apple-Goat Cheese Pizza post. Anyway, I've had the Original BBQ Chicken Pizza at CPK and they're the only place that I know of that puts cilantro on it and it's RIDICULOUS. Hence, the cilantro. I'm betting that adding some extra veg would be great in this also, but today, I went classic 🙂
The awesome thing about the sauce recipe is that it freezes beautifully! I made a large batch and then froze it in ½ cup increments (4 servings). When I want to defrost, I take the frozen sauce out of the plastic bag, put it in a microwave safe dish and set it to defrost, stirring it every once in a while until it's warm. Instant yum!

📖 Recipe
21 Day Fix Barbecue Sauce & BBQ Chicken Pita Pizza
Ingredients
21 Day Fix Barbecue Sauce:
- 6 oz can of tomato paste
- ¾ cup water
- 2 Tbs balsamic vinegar
- 2 Tbs molasses
- 1 Tbs raw sugar
- 2 Tbs Worcestershire sauce (Lea & Perrins has all clean ingredients and you can get it pretty much anywhere)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon liquid smoke
- a pinch of salt
- black pepper, to taste
For the BBQ Chicken Pizza:
- 1 whole wheat pita
- 2 Tbs 21 Day Fix Barbecue Sauce
- ¾ cup cooked, diced chicken breast
- ⅓ cup shredded cheese (I used half Monterey jack, half sharp cheddar)
- 3 Tbs red onion, sliced or chopped
- 2 Tbs fresh cilantro, roughly chopped (or whole if you have small leaves)
Instructions
To make the barbecue sauce:
- Heat all ingredients together in a small pot over medium heat and bring to a bubble. Check seasonings and adjust if necessary. Let bubble, giving it a stir every minute or two, for about five minutes. That's it!
Barbecue Chicken Pita Pizza:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Place a pita on a baking sheet (no cooking spray is necessary), spread 2 Tbs of BBQ sauce on it. Top with the cooked chicken, then the cheese, then the red onions. Bake for 15 minutes.
- Pull it out of the oven, sprinkle with the cilantro and talk yourself out of making another one. YUM!!

I had ordered some BBQ sauce from Walmart but they were sold out, as happens these days. I didn't know what to do so I thought I would make some of my own. I was searching for a recipe with the ingredients I had on hand and found your recipe. It turned out perfectly and passed the husband test. The baby back ribs were wonderful.

So glad that this recipe saved the day and you guys enjoyed it! Thanks for your comment!

How long would the sauce store for?
I loved this recipe. I didn't have molasses so I used honey. It was still delicious. I also didn't have tomato paste. Lol so I used tomato sauce in excess and omitted the water. Not very thick, but not very runny either!
Stephanie says
Hi Kati! I'm so glad you liked it and that the honey worked out, sounds great! 🙂 I would say at least 4-5 days.

Mine is kinda thin and tastes a little too tomato-y. What should I add more off?
Stephanie says
Hi Carla! Hmm... I'm really not sure why it's thin, it's always turned out pretty thick for me - did you use tomato paste or maybe a thinner tomato product? (that also might make it taste more tomato-y) If I wanted it to taste less tomato-y, I would probably try adding in more of the seasonings, garlic powder, etc.. Hope this helps!

What is the comtainer count for just the sauce?
Stephanie says
It's one orange 🙂

I just made this and it was wonderful!! I am just starting out with the 21 day fix, haven't even received my containers yet. But I'm wondering how you calculate all the extras, like molasses...
Also, what brand of pita do you use? Yours looks quite a bit larger than mine.
Thanks so much!
Stephanie says
Thanks, Loren, glad you liked it! Molasses is essentially a sweetener, so I count it towards my teaspoons of sugar, which the book talks about in the "Tea and Coffee Bar" section when you get it. I've found with pitas that every store carries a different brand, in fact the only brand that my store carries (Meijer) is their own store brand and I can't seem to find the small ones near me. I'm not sure what size yours are, but the book calls for 4-inch pitas and mine are 6-inch, so I have to count mine as 1 1/2 yellows instead of 1. Good luck with your first round, if you have any other questions, I'm happy to help!

Thank you so much! I may be bugging you, if you don't mind!

No problem at all!

Just made this. It's very good. My question is have u ever made it with raw honey instead of molasses? The molasses flavor is really strong to me.
Stephanie says
I've never made it that way, so I couldn't say for sure. Molasses helps to give it that classic barbecue flavor, but if it's too strong for you, by all means, scale it back or try switching it out for honey like you suggested. You could always start by doing half honey and half molasses and see how you like it 🙂
